Professor Kim Heebal (Program in Animal Science and Biotechnology), a member of the Avian Genome Consortium, was listed as co-author of ¡°Comparative genomics reveals insights into avian genome evolution and adaptation¡± published in journal Science. Over the last 4 years, several hundred scientists in over 20 countries have conducted a joint research project to analyze the genome of 48 birds and found that there was a ¡®big bang¡¯ in avian evolution after the extinction of dinosaurs. Eight papers were published in the special edition of Science and another 21 were published in other science journals. Professor Kim¡¯s research focused on brain related genome evolution of vocal learning birds compared to vocal nonlearners.
