It is a great joy and honor indeed to deliver a congratulatory speech for International Science Culture Forum, Seoul 2009, hosted by Humboldt-Club Korea. Last spring, Prof. Dr. Sam-huan Ahn in our Department of German Language and Literature, who is the chair of the organizing committee for this science culture forum, requested support for the successful hosting of the occasion. As President of Ƶ (SNU), I happily agreed to be of assistance. Looking back, there were two reasons for my enthusiasm. First, I wished, however modestly, to respond with gratitude to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for its dedication and contribution to the development of scholarship for the entire humankind and the international exchange of renowned scholars as a major organ not only in Germany but also around the world. Second, I felt that Brain-Cognition-Mind Convergence and Ethics of the Future Society, the theme of this forum, was a most timely one for the growth of the South Korean academia. Honored members of Humboldt-Club Korea. As the elite of the South Korean academia who have studied or conducted research in Germany thanks to the prestigious Foundation, you have the grave responsibility to work for both South Korean society and human civilization in the future. In this respect, I have no doubt whatsoever that the topics that you will discuss and explore today together with the two distinguished guests, who are leading scholars in Germany, will contribute considerably to the further development of scholarship in this country. I strongly hope, too, that, such efforts and accomplishments will help to establish an open academic climate that can overcome barriers not only between disciplines but also between nations. Finally, as President of SNU, I would like to take this opportunity to express gratitude to the Foundation, which has contributed immensely to academic development in South Korea by educating and providing scholarships to innumerable students and researchers from this country. In warmly thanking His Excellency, Ambassador Seidt and Dr. Janetzke, Deputy Secretary-General of the Foundation, I strongly hope that South Korea and its universities including SNU will no longer remain recipients but actively promote academic exchange with both Germany and its universities. Respected Prof. Dr. Young-June Lee, President of Humboldt-Club Korea. I strongly hope and know that todays forum will bear many fruits and lead to more active academic and cultural exchange between the two countries. Thank you.
